Replicating a design or look is what the professionals are trained to achieve but owners must understand color variations are inherent to the look and should be anticipated and unavoidable at times. The overlay process is intended to achieve an authentic stone-like effect. Some variations in texture, shading, coloring, and overlay depth along with other irregularities are likely to occur from stone to stone and throughout the overlay project and are part of custom look in the installation. Owners must recognize and understand that final sealed installation may or may not be an exact match from one replicated stone or slab area including samples provided by professional.

Is it possible to install a decorative cement-based overlay right over vinyl floors?
Yes. You must make sure the vinyl is well adhered to the concrete before installing the overlay.
If the vinyl is not removed an expanded metal lathe can be stapled to the floor for structural support.
The cement-based overlay is poured over the lathe.
Is it possible to install a decorative cement-based overlay right over ceramic tile?
Yes. But only if the tile is sound and in good condition. You can determine this by conducting a chain-drag test for tile adherence. Other factors to consider:
- If the tile is glazed, it must be scuffed up first to ensure a good bond.
- Before applying the overlay, you must pre seal the grout joints so they won't absorb moisture from the overlay. This can result in differential curing and ghosting of the joints through the overlay.
Is it possible to install a decorative cement-based overlay right over wood flooring?
Yes, even wood flooring can be covered with a concrete overlay if you want to change the look or the flooring is in bad shape aesthetically.
The main consideration is how much deflection the floor exhibits, which is usually determined by the joist spacing and the thickness of the wood used.
